Vegan Shopping - Manchester Superstore, Bolton.

That first vegan shopping I bought lasted two weeks instead of one! I still have a couple of canned items left, and I had to top up with some things, like bananas and tinned tomatoes, but I'm pretty impressed. Today I went to Manchester Superstore and here's what I bought.

A Week Of Vegan Meals - Week One

Porridge: I'm not very good at mornings. In fact I'm really, really crap at mornings. Eating is the last thing on my mind when I first get up, so I don't do breakfast. However, these days I can't afford to be starving when I'm out and about, because sausage rolls from the bakery are very tempting, but they aren't vegan. And so I've tried forcing myself to have breakfast a few days this week. Porridge, made with almond milk, is very nice. I haven't missed cows' milk in porridge at all.

Try Something New - Persimmon

Today I tried a persimmon, sometimes known as hong.

I'll definitely be eating those again! DELICIOUS!! It's much like mango in texture, but there's no stone. It tastes a little bit like mango too, only a bit more perfumey, like lychees, and a lot milder in flavour.

I'm A Meatoholic

Today I have been craving everything I've given up. Steak, liver, bacon, paté, lamb chops, cheese, steak, milk, flaky butter pastries, ice-cream, sausage rolls, cheese pie, ox-tongue, chocolate bars, steak, cake.... My stream of consciousness has been a never-ending conveyor-belt of non-vegan food. And it has involved blood. Lots of blood. I swear at one point I was watching some folk crossing over a zebra crossing in front of me, and I was sizing up their thighs thinking about which one would make the best roast. it's been bad.

My First Vegan Shop and Why I Ate Those Eggs Last Night

Homemade cream cakes, scones and egg sandwiches aren't vegan. But I ate them last night anyway. My best friend Simon had made such a lovely tea party for us, gone to such trouble, and I was starving. All I'd had to eat yesterday was three slices of bread with peanut butter. It was all I had in. I figured not starving myself was probably the better option in these circumstances. At least the eggs came from their own well-looked-after chickens. And being appreciative and grateful for the trouble he'd gone to was the right thing to do, especially so early on in my vegan journey. Today I went shopping, so no excuses now.
